How to Use the Pet Name Generators — Full Guide

Full guide to the free dog and cat name generators, gender and style filters, name meanings, the shortlist feature, and naming tips from our editors.

The name generators hold 100+ curated names for dogs and cats, each with its meaning and a style tag, filterable by gender and vibe. Everything runs in your browser, needs no sign-up, and saves your favorites locally on your device. This guide covers every control, how the shortlist works, and the naming principles behind the list.

Using the generator, step by step

  1. Open the dog name generator or the cat name generator — the controls are identical.
  2. Filter by gender if it matters to you: male, female, or any. Every name carries a gender tag.
  3. Filter by style: cute, cool, classic, funny or food. The style tag reflects the vibe the name gives off — "Biscuit" is food and cute; "Thor" is cool; "Pickles" is funny.
  4. Browse the grid. Each card shows the name and a short meaning or inspiration ("Luna — the moon").
  5. Tap Shuffle to re-deal the whole grid when you want fresh eyes.
  6. Tap the heart on any name you like. It jumps into your shortlist at the top of the page.
  7. Compare your shortlist, sleep on it, come back — saved names persist in your browser (per species, so dog and cat lists stay separate).
  8. Use Clear all when the debate is finally settled. Congratulations.

How the shortlist works

Favorites are stored in your browser's local storage — nothing is sent to a server, and no account is involved. That means your shortlist is tied to this device and browser: clear your browser data (or switch browsers) and the list resets. If you've fallen in love with a name, write it somewhere real before clearing anything.

The shortlist is intentionally simple — names plus meanings, no notes or sharing. The point is narrowing to three or four candidates you can say out loud for a day and see which one sticks.

Choosing well: the principles we curated by

  • Two syllables is the sweet spot. Short names are easiest for a pet to recognize and for you to shout across a park.
  • Bright "ee" endings carry. Kiki, Mochi, Rosie — cats in particular respond well to these sounds.
  • Avoid command collisions. "Kit" sounds like "sit"; "Bo" sounds like "no". If it's confusing to hear, it's confusing to learn.
  • The field test. Imagine calling the name at full volume in a public park. If you'd hesitate, keep browsing — there are a hundred more below your scroll.

Our cat name FAQ and dog name FAQ answer the classic questions — popular names, renaming an adopted cat, human names versus funny ones — with more depth.

Troubleshooting

The grid shows very few names. Two filters are probably combined too tightly — "female + food" gives you a handful by design. Reset one filter or hit Shuffle.

My saved names disappeared. The shortlist lives in this browser. Private/incognito windows don't keep it, and clearing site data removes it. Nothing was lost on our side — nothing ever left your device.

I want more names. The list is curated rather than infinite: every name here passed the "would we say it out loud" test. Shuffle re-orders, and we add new names regularly.

Do meanings work in my language? The name meanings are short English tags, kept universal across languages on purpose — the names are the same international shortlist everywhere.

Naming is step one of the fun. Step two is putting the face to the name — a free AI portrait or a cute avatar makes the announcement post complete. And if you're still deciding whether your new kitten is indeed a kitten, the pet age calculator settles it in seconds.
